Football: West Ham beat Fulham 2-0 to post fourth win in a row
LONDON (REUTERS) - West Ham won their fourth successive Premier League game to add to Fulham’s woes at Craven Cottage on Saturday (Dec 15), beating their cross-London rivals 2-0 with goals from Robert Snodgrass and Michail Antonio.
Fulham, yet to keep a clean sheet this season, stayed rooted to the bottom of the table with nine points from 17 games, while the Hammers rose to ninth place on 24 points.
New Fulham manager Claudio Ranieri had been looking to build on the four points his side took in their first two home games under his charge.
His players created most of the early pressure, with strikers Andre Schurlle and Aboubakar Kamara firing in shots and creating chances within the opening 10 minutes.
But it was Manuel Pellegrini’s visitors who took the lead after 17 minutes when midfielder Felipe Anderson sprang past Fulham’s Denis Odoi and fed the ball back to Snodgrass, who blasted his left-footed shot high into the top left corner.
Anderson helped West Ham to double their lead 12 minutes later, crossing in from near the sideline to Javier Hernandez. The Mexican striker nodded the ball back behind him to Antonio, who brought it down and quickly slotted it between the legs of onrushing Cottagers keeper Sergio Rico.Â
West Ham have won every game in December, their best run in the Premier League since February 2014.
“In the first half, you create a few chances against a team like Fulham, who are scrapping for points, you have to take them and we did. It was a great performance and four wins on the bounce is always good,†said Snodgrass.
The contrast could not be starker with their first four games of the season, all of which they lost, and the Hammers are now just two points behind sixth-placed Manchester United.
Ranieri was philosophical in defeat although he knows Fulham’s fortunes will have to turn around soon if they are to avoid an instant return to the Championship.
“We have to stay calm, reflect and try to work harder, harder and harder,†said the Italian. “In a bad moment, it is important to stay together. We have a very good group, I’m sure we will react soon.â€

Football: Zaniolo strikes twice to clinch Roma win over Porto in Champions League
ROME (REUTERS) - Two goals from teenager Nicolo Zaniolo earned AS Roma a 2-1 win against Porto in their Champions League last-16 first leg on Tuesday (Feb 12).
The 19-year-old continued his superb breakthrough season by finding the net twice in six second-half minutes to become the youngest Italian to score two goals in a Champions League match.
Porto substitute Adrian Lopez, however, quickly responded with what could prove to be a crucial away goal.
The result ended a five-match winning run in Europe for Porto, who will welcome Roma to the Estadio do Dragao for the second leg on March 6.
Klopp's side have 61 points from 24 games with champions City, beaten at Newcastle United on Tuesday, on 56. Chelsea dropped to fifth place after a 4-0 drubbing at mid-table Bournemouth — Joshua King scoring twice as the hosts netted all four goals in the second half.

Football: Singapore to play Solomon Islands and Myanmar in friendlies, new national coach soon to be unveiled
SINGAPORE - After a seven-month wait, the Lions will play at the National Stadium again, and also welcome a new ringmaster.
The Straits Times understands that the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) will unveil Tatsuma Yoshida as the new national coach this week, after announcing on Monday (May 27) two international friendlies against Solomon Islands on June 8 and Myanmar on June 11.
The national coach position has been vacant since Fandi Ahmad's interim stint ended following Singapore's group-stage elimination at the AFF Suzuki Cup in November 2018. The Lions last played at the Sports Hub in a 6-1 group-stage win over Timor-Leste in that tournament. Former international Nazri Nasir led the team as caretaker in their international friendlies in March 2019.
FAS general secretary Yazeen Buhari said: "The upcoming international window is a vital period for the national team to gather for centralised training and friendly matches, especially for the overseas players.
"The two friendlies will help the team build momentum from the positive performances in the last international window. In addition, these matches will also aid the team in their preparations for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers which will be played later this year."
The Lions acquitted themselves well in their last two friendlies at the Airmarine Cup in Malaysia, where they beat the hosts 1-0 and held Oman to a 1-1 draw before a penalty shootout defeat in March.
Yazeen added: "We made a deliberate attempt to schedule the June matches at the Home of the Lions in order for our fans to be able to support and rally the Lions at our very own National Stadium.
"We are also thankful to have the support of our venue partner, Singapore Sports Hub, who made it possible for the friendlies to be played at the Home of the Lions."
Â
While world No. 139 Solomon Islands and Myanmar (140th) are hardly glamour teams, they represent decent opponents Singapore (160th) have a realistic chance to get a positive result against.
A win or a draw would add Fifa ranking points as the Lions bid to squeeze into the top 32 Asian teams - they are currently 33rd - and move up from the fifth pot into the fourth pot, for a potentially more favourable World Cup qualifiers draw in July.
National skipper Hariss Harun said: "We want to carry on the momentum from our previous friendlies and go for the wins in these two games.
"The new coach will have his own ideas and the faster the players can adapt, the better it will be for the national team, and we are looking forward to working with him."
In February, ST had revealed Yoshida as the frontrunner for the national coach position. The Chiba native was a central midfielder and started his playing career with hometown club Kashiwa Reysol before turning out for Kyoto Sanga and Montedio Yamagata.
In 2002, he signed for Jurong FC and played under former Singapore coach V. Sundram Moorthy, then player-coach for the Cobras.
After hanging up his boots that year, Yoshida returned to Reysol, where he rose through the ranks from youth-team coach to technical director and then the head coach.
Although he lasted just one season each as head coach of Reysol (2015) and Albirex Niigata (2016), and was also sacked by Ventforet Kofu last year, it was his youth development work that impressed FAS as he helped produce some Japan internationals such as Marseille right-back Hiroki Sakai.

Football: Solskjaer reminds Manchester United they will have to wait for next Premier League title
MANCHESTER (AFP) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted on Tuesday (April 23) that Manchester United will not be capable of competing for the English Premier League title next season in a stark assessment of the current gulf between his side and Wednesday's opponents Manchester City.
United take on City at Old Trafford 22 points behind the reigning champions and 24 adrift of leaders Liverpool, despite coach Solskjaer initially going a dozen league games unbeaten after succeeding the sacked Jose Mourinho.
Last weekend's 4-0 hammering at Everton was the third defeat in their five matches since and the 46-year-old called for patience when asked if he thought his squad was capable of competing for the title next season.
"I don't think we've got the consistency to do that," said the former United striker.
"Over the last 18 games, we're not far away from them but it's doing it over the course of a season.
"We've done it for half a season now. Let's see. You can never say never."
United were last crowned champions in 2013, and Solskjaer added: "You cannot expect things to happen overnight and we know that. It will happen gradually and we have to be realistic enough as a club that we have to take it step by step.
"That's not changing 10 players now and bringing 10 players in. It's slowly, slowly but surely.
"It has to be the right quality, right personality, the right standards to get us back to where we want to be."
Solskjaer has often spoken at length of the need for his players to take personal pride in playing for one of the world's biggest clubs, and following their recent rotten run of six defeats in eight matches in all competitions, he also said that the pain of falling behind United's two major local rivals was acute.
"For me, the motivation is towards something, to win something yourself," he said.
"We have to want to overtake them, not because it's City and Liverpool. But of course because it's City and Liverpool, for a supporter as I am, and as a manager now as well, because they're so close in the vicinity as well, we want to be the best.
"We have been the best, and it's not nice seeing those two at the top," he admitted.
Solskjaer's emotional post-match response at Goodison Park saw him warn some of his under-performing stars that they will not be at the club long-term.
"I think now is not the time to make drastic changes, but of course we do plan ahead... we know who we want to bring with us," he said.
"There are many of these players who will stay at the club for so many years and be successful, and I'm going to do everything I can to be successful and hopefully these players can come out with a response the next four games.
"But we're still planning long term, and that's just natural. That's the cycle of a team, that it changes."

'Realistic'

LONDON • Pep Guardiola believes Manchester City are back to their best after Sergio Aguero's hat-trick secured a 3-1 win against Arsenal, with the manager admitting the champions did not "recognise" themselves after their shock Premier League loss at Newcastle last week.
His players bounced back thanks to Aguero's treble, the 14th of his City career. The tally moved him to 20 goals in 28 matches this season.
Guardiola hailed his team's response after Laurent Koscielny had pulled Arsenal level in the first half.
The Spaniard said: "What is important is being ourselves. That's what I want. We spoke in the last days. We didn't recognise our team in the last game.
"They know it. They felt the same way. Today at least we came back."
Admitting his side had to concentrate only on their own results, with a testing trip to Everton to come tomorrow, and not be preoccupied with league front-runners Liverpool, he added: "Football is unpredictable... we are the only ones playing in midweek and we have to prepare to win three points.
"We don't have one week off, now we rest and prepare for Goodison Park and afterwards, Chelsea (on Sunday)...
"We have to win a lot of games. A lot of things will happen from now until the end of the season, every game will be tough. What we have to do is try to show which way we are a nice (attractive) team.
"Our performance against Newcastle, we scored (early) and didn't try again and again - no fight to try to score the second goal.
"And then three or four days later, now we score after 46 seconds and try to get the second and try to get more goals.
"That's the big lesson we can learn from these four or five days. When that happens, we are a team that can be proud of what we do."
He also lauded Aguero, who started successive league games for only the second time in the last two months, before insisting he always had a good relationship with the Argentina forward, despite speculation to the contrary.
The 48-year-old added: "He was born with that talent, he will die with that talent. I'm pleased. People said I wasn't friends with him (previously) but I try to be honest - always, I was delighted with him.
"Today, not because of the three goals, (but) because of how we fought for the team. He has his own quality.
"I judge the intention, not the result and the intention from Sergio has been perfect. A striker needs to score and he gave absolutely everything for the team."
But, the scoreline might have been closer after the 30-year-old, who is now only one hat-trick short of Alan Shearer's league record of 11, told reporters he handled the ball over the line for the third goal.
TV replays showed the ball had glanced off his elbow past Bernd Leno, with pundits split on whether it should have been disallowed.
Graeme Souness told Sky Sports the goal should have been ruled out, but Jamie Carragher felt "it would have been harsh to take it away from him".
Aguero's admission was, however, of little comfort to Unai Emery, whose Gunners dropped to sixth place, three points from a Champions League berth, leaving him unsure of a top-four finish.
The Gunners boss said: "After losing 3-1, it's not easy to say that, but we know we need big help.
"Our challenge now is the next week, continue to work and improve, and think how we can work and be better.
"Last week, we won and were with Chelsea in fourth position, but we lost today, (and) lost this position."
