Football: Ryan Giggs hits back after Zlatan Ibrahimovic criticism of Man Utd 'Class of 92'

LONDON (AFP) - Ryan Giggs has responded to Zlatan Ibrahimovic's criticism of the "Class of 92" by insisting players with "over 2,000 games between us" are entitled to have an opinion about Manchester United.
Former United striker Ibrahimovic claimed in a newspaper interview that the ongoing loyalty of Giggs and other pundits such as Gary Neville and Paul Scholes to Alex Ferguson has fuelled criticism of Paul Pogba.
Ibrahimovic told the Daily Mirror that the criticism of Pogba dated back to his decision to walk away from Old Trafford and sign for Juventus in 2012 when Ferguson was still United manager.
"Only Nicky (Butt) is connected with the club now but when you play over 2,000 games between us, we are going to have an opinion," said Wales manager Giggs, who made a record 963 appearances for United between 1991 and 2014.
"Sometimes it's positive, sometimes negative, but it doesn't have an effect on results. We are supporters. That's what football is about, having different opinions.
"But he (Ibrahimovic) obviously knows more about the club than us."
Giggs, 45, and his former Class of 92 teammates Neville, Scholes, Butt, David Beckham and Phil Neville, played a combined total of 3,450 games during the most successful period in United's history.
Ibrahimovic played 53 games for United after being signed by Jose Mourinho in 2016, before joining LA Galaxy in March 2018.
Giggs, speaking at United's training base, where Wales were preparing for Wednesday's friendly against Trinidad and Tobago, was also asked about the possibility of Manchester City trumping the United side of which he was a member in 1999.
United won the treble of Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup that year but City remain on course for an unprecedented quadruple.
Pep Guardiola's team have already won the League Cup and are still in the hunt for Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup glory.
City survived an FA Cup quarter-final scare at Swansea on Saturday to win 3-2 after being 2-0 down.
"I've got enough to worry about, please don't bring that up." Giggs said. "They're a fantastic team, aren't they?
"They've already got one and United going out of the FA Cup makes it a little bit easier for them.
"They've got a long way to go but just like us in the treble, you need a lot of things to go for you. That bit of luck, which they had at the weekend.
"But they are a brilliant team. It will be interesting to see what they can achieve."

Football: Chelsea banned from signing new players for next two transfer windows

PARIS (AFP) - Premier League club Chelsea have been banned from signing new players in the next two transfer windows as punishment for breaking rules on registering underage players, Fifa said on Friday (Feb 22).
It means the club will be unable to make signings until the end of January 2020.
"The Disciplinary Committee sanctioned Chelsea with a ban on registering new players at both national and international level for the next two complete and consecutive registration periods," Fifa said in a statement.
In addition, Chelsea were fined 600,000 Swiss francs (S$811,000) and given a period of 90 days to regularise the situation of the minor players concerned.
The ban does not prevent players being released by the club and it does not apply to Chelsea's women's and futsal teams.
Chelsea have been given three days to appeal against Fifa's decision.
The move follows a Fifa probe into Chelsea's signing of foreign under-18 players, including the club's former forward Bertrand Traore, a Burkina Faso international who now plays for French Ligue 1 club Lyon.
Traore signed professional forms for Chelsea in 2013 at the age of 18 but was not registered until January the following year.
French website Mediapart, quoting documents from Football Leaks, reported that Fifa had scrutinised 19 Chelsea signings.
Mediapart reported that Fifa found evidence that Chelsea had supplied misleading information about Traore's signing and that he had made more than 20 appearances for the club at different age levels despite not being registered by the Football Association.
Fifa said on Friday it was also fining the Football Association 510,000 Swiss francs for breaking the rules on signing minors.
The world governing body gave the FA a period of six months to update its processes concerning international transfers and the registration of minors.

Football: Valencia to face Barca in Copa final after seeing off Betis

VALENCIA (REUTERS) - Valencia set up a Copa del Rey showdown with Barcelona as they reached the final for the first time in 11 years by beating Real Betis 1-0 at a bouncing Mestalla on Thursday (Feb 28) where a second-half Rodrigo Moreno strike gave them a 3-2 aggregate win.
Valencia, who lifted the trophy on their last appearance in the showpiece match in 2008, will meet 30-times winners Barca in the final on May 25 at Betis' Benito Villamarin stadium.
Marcelino's side fought back from two goals down to snatch a 2-2 draw in the first leg and a goalless home draw would have seen them through on away goals. They appeared set up to absorb the pressure, inviting Betis to have most of the possession.
The visitors had the better of the chances in a tight and tense first period and it took a strong hand from Valencia keeper Jaume Domenech to turn over a shot from Jese, while Betis defender Aissa Mandi headed narrowly wide following a corner.
Valencia showed more ambition after the interval and went ahead with a well worked move in the 56th minute which saw Kevin Gameiro race into the box and slide the ball across for Moreno to comfortably tuck it into the empty net from close range.
That meant Betis needed at least two goals to progress and, while they continued to monopolise the ball, Valencia controlled the space and rarely looked like letting their lead slip.
Barca, who have won the last four editions of the competition, beat Real Madrid 3-0 away on Wednesday for a 4-1 aggregate victory in the other semi-final.

Football: 'Start playing like Manchester United', pleads Rashford

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Marcus Rashford has called on Manchester United players to "be real with each other" after Manchester City condemned them to a seventh defeat in nine games on Wednesday (April 24).
Bernardo Silva and Leroy Sane struck for the visitors in 12 second-half minutes at Old Trafford to seal a 2-0 win over United, who remain three points adrift of the top four.
"Today we didn't play like Manchester United," Rashford told Sky Sports.
"It's not right. The bare minimum is to work hard and give all for the badge, the supporters, the club and yourself.
"It has been a tough road to get to where we are, to get there and not be putting up the same performances as we were in January is disappointing. We know what's been going wrong - it's mentality and willingness to run for your team.
"Forget the league and top four, you don't lose this game. It's that simple as a Manchester United fan. We never call each other out but we have to be real with each other. It's a matter of trying to improve each other.
"It's more getting back used to doing it on the pitch. They (the supporters) know we can do it. Forget the top four and the Champions League. We have to get to the bottom of it and start playing like Manchester United for ourselves."

And it showed. We played hard for 48 minutes." Mike Conley had 11 points and seven assists for the Grizzlies in the opener of a four-game California trip. Last season they finished with a winning road record for the first time at 24-17, third-best in the NBA. "It felt good, especially being our first road win of the season," Randolph said.

Football: Emotional Diego Godin to leave Atletico Madrid after nine-year stay

MADRID (REUTERS) - Atletico Madrid captain Diego Godin is leaving the club after nine years when his contract expires in June, the Uruguayan defender said at a news conference on Tuesday (May 7), fighting to hold back tears.
Godin, 33, has played 387 times for Atletico since joining from Villarreal in 2010, scoring 27 goals - including famously clinching the club's first LaLiga title in 18 years with a header in a 1-1 draw at Barcelona in 2014.
Godin did not say where he is going, but numerous Spanish media have reported that he is on his way to Italian Serie A club Inter Milan.
"I'm a little nervous, much more than I am before a game, but I have called everyone here to inform you that these are my final days at the club," Godin said.
Atletico president Enrique Cerezo added: "We are here to say goodbye to an Atletico legend. You have been a vital part of this great era for the club, with your efforts and your goals, like the one which gave us the title at the Nou Camp.
"You have fought in a thousand battles and defended the club's shirt in every game and you have worn the captain's armband.
"Wherever you end up, Atletico wishes you a lot of luck. Atletico is your family, the Wanda Metropolitano is your home."

In addition to the LaLiga triumph, Godin won two Europa League titles, one Copa del Rey, one Spanish Super Cup and three Uefa Super Cups with Atletico as well as reaching the 2014 and 2016 Champions League finals, only to lose both times to Real.
Godin's departure will leave another hole in Atletico's defence, with France international Lucas Hernandez already agreeing to join Bayern Munich in June after they paid his €80 million (S$ 122 million) release clause.

Huddersfield 1
Manchester United 1
LONDON • Manchester United's slender hopes of a top-four finish were ended in shambolic fashion when they surrendered an early lead to relegated Huddersfield, allowing the club marooned at the bottom of the table with 14 points to claim a wholly unexpected 15th.
Not that much has gone the Terriers' way in their two-season stay in the Premier League, but at least the side that share the earliest relegation with Derby can take pride in taking four points from the Red Devils in two league meetings at the John Smith's Stadium.
Huddersfield won this fixture last season and, despite a poor start, they had their chances in the second half to cause a similar shock.
In the circumstances, they were happy with a draw, however, which is more than can be said for United.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side were hoping to stay in contention until the final day of the season at least, but this result coupled with Chelsea's 3-0 victory over Watford means a Champions League place is now out of reach, with no one to blame but themselves.
Afterwards, the Norwegian cut a resigned figure, admitting "the table seldom lies at the end".
He said: "We haven't taken enough points, won enough games, scored enough goals - it's always difficult when you lose your manager halfway through the season. It's caught up with us a little bit.

REALITY BITES HARD
We haven't taken enough points, won enough games, scored enough goals. It's always difficult when you lose your manager halfway through the season. It's caught up with us a little bit.
It shows us where we are. We're not living in fantasy land thinking we can catch the top two. We're far away, but we shouldn't be speaking about being far off the top four at Manchester United.
It's a great challenge for us, but I'm sure we'll make it.
OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER, Manchester United manager, being honest about the scale of the rebuilding job ahead.

"Today wasn't one individual that was disappointing, it was the whole team. We had so many opportunities to grab third or fourth and weren't able to.
"It's probably the right place to be for us, Europa League next year and, if City don't win the FA Cup, we'll have an early and bright start for Europa League qualifiers and that'll make it more difficult."
His players played some good stuff in the first half, mainly because they were allowed to, with Juan Mata, Paul Pogba and even Alexis Sanchez finding it easy to slice through the home defence.
Yet in terms of end product, the visitors were almost as ineffective as Huddersfield themselves.
They were only able to take the lead because Jonas Lossl failed to make a routine save from Scott McTominay's speculative shot.
It was the sort of mistake David de Gea has been making of late. The Danish goalkeeper was probably unsighted as the midfielder fired his shot but, even so, an effort of no great pace went straight through him to give United an early lead.
Pogba headed against the bar just before the interval, but United were unable to translate their clear superiority into goals. On occasions, they were downright wasteful in possession in the first half.
Solskjaer still felt safe enough to send on Ander Herrera for Nemanja Matic and Tahith Chong when Sanchez went down injured after the break but, just past the hour, the Terriers hit them with a route-one sucker punch.
With everyone but Luke Shaw up for a corner, Lossl caught Mata's cross and punted the ball downfield, where the bounce eluded the defender's attempt to cut out the danger, allowing Isaac Mbenza to run on and place a shot under de Gea for his first Huddersfield goal.
The stadium erupted, home fans having had little to cheer in recent weeks. When a chant went round the ground reminding Solskjaer's men they were playing a relegated side, United supporters joined in.
If that was comedy, the five-minute wait for a new corner flag after Mbenza snapped one with his goal celebration was pure farce, a reminder if one were needed that United were up against opponents of Championship standard.
United chased a late winner, but though Pogba hit the bar again, a draw was a fair enough result on the balance of play, even after eight minutes of added time, and there was no doubt who enjoyed it most.
"Champions League, you're having a laugh" was the taunt as the away fans made their way home.

SHANGHAI (AFP) - Marcello Lippi says he will quit for a second time if he fails to guide ambitious China to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The 71-year-old Italian World Cup winner is back as national coach just four months after leaving.
But with qualification for Qatar 2022 beginning in September, the under-pressure veteran has little time to lose if he is to inspire China to only their second World Cup appearance.
"Will we qualify for the Qatar World Cup? I don't know, we will try, we will make every effort," the former Juventus, Inter Milan, Napoli and Italy coach told broadcaster CCTV5.
"If we can do it, that's great, if we can't, I will embrace all the Chinese and go home," he added in his first substantive comments since his return was confirmed last week.
"This is work, this is life - using all passion, all enthusiasm, all experience to try to do one thing, but the final result may be success or it may be failure."
The Italian, who was speaking ahead of Friday's (June 7) home friendly with the Philippines, said that he had declined to extend his contract with the Chinese Football Association (CFA) after his side lost 3-0 to Iran in the quarter-finals of the Asian Cup in January.

But Lippi remained popular in China, where there was an acceptance that he did not have a good-enough squad to progress further.
"After staying at home for three or four months, I realised that China's appreciation and expectation of me was so important so I decided to give something back," he explained in the interview broadcast on Monday.
"I have not made a long-term commitment because it makes no sense - our goal is Qatar in 2022."
Guangzhou Evergrande coach Fabio Cannavaro, Lippi's captain when Italy won the 2006 World Cup, succeeded his mentor earlier this year.
But Cannavaro lost both matches in charge of the national side and stepped down.
Separately, the Asian Football Confederation confirmed on Tuesday (June 4) that China will stage the 2023 Asian Cup, a possible dry-run for hosting a World Cup, after all the other countries in the running dropped their bids.
It will mark the second time China has hosted the quadrennial continental tournament, after the 2004 edition when they finished runners-up to Japan.
"It's great for China, a great honour for China to be hosts of the 2023 Asian Cup. We are ready and confident of staging a successful tournament," Chinese Fifa Council member Du Zhaocai said at the AFC Extraordinary Congress in Paris.
Last month, South Korea abandoned its bid to stage the tournament, leaving China as the sole candidate with a free run to become hosts.
Thailand and Indonesia had also previously expressed interest in hosting the 2023 event, but had dropped out earlier.
China's football-fan President Xi Jinping has stated his aim for the country to stage the showpiece World Cup one day and wants the country to become a major force in the sport.
China, who have qualified only once for the World Cup in 2002, are ranked a lowly 74th in the world in Fifa's rankings, sandwiched between Panama and Cape Verde.
This year's Asian Cup in the UAE was expanded to 24 nations for the first time, with Qatar winning the final 3-1 against Japan.
